As a book collector, okay, hoarder, I find some strange and bizarre bookmarks. My favorite was a laminated lock of baby hair. My most disgusting discovery? I'm not telling unless you ask!

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 7:09 PMLOL that's funny! Did you find it inside the book, or for sale?
I just use business cards for bookmarks. They're free, and I don't care if I lose them.

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 8:05 PMIn any group of librarians someone always has the (possibly aprocryphal) story of the bacon-strip-bookmark.
I can't think of odd bookmarks found, but coming across people's handwritten notes in books (sometimes on bits of paper that *might* have been a bookmark) always feels intensely voyeuristic to me ...
What was the most disgusting discovery?? Tell, please tell! -

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 8:18 AMThere's a book out about the notes people write in their books. I haven't read it yet, but the review sounded interesting. I believe it's called "Marginalia". -

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Sat, August 13, 2005 - 8:17 AMI haven't found many. One of the best was a leather gold-leaf stamped bookmark with about a dozen versions of the cross on it with all their names (Greek Orthodox, St. Andrews, etc.). Very funny, given that I'm very involved in my SM community and I've seen most of the designs as furniture in various playspaces.
I've also found greeting cards with handwritten notes and recipies on them tucked away in old cookbooks.

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 11:17 AMI literally have thousands: betting slips, tissues, Dear John letters, business cards, etc. I think the most interesting I've found in the last few months were a dozen or so safe-conduct passes from the Republic of South Vietnam. I called a militaria collector, and he told me that crates of these were dumped over enemy lines in an attempt to get the VC to surrender. "Of course, they put a gun to their heads anyway, so it was pretty superfluous." They're very colorful, though.
Another find was a one-peso note issued by the Japanese Government for use in the occupied Philippines!

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Sun, January 15, 2006 - 2:58 PMI have a shoeboxful. i like the ones from old NW bookstores, there's so many that don't exist anymore. And a few artistic ones--I like the delicate ones, with flowers pressed inside thin laminate or wax paper.

Re: Found any interesting bookmarks?
Tue, May 2, 2006 - 6:21 AMThe most unique thing I ever found in a book was a Confederate dollar bill. Grossest was probably a piece of dental floss that may or may not have been used before being given a second purpose in life.
I collect bookmarks - promotional bookmarks, bookmarks printed up by great little independent bookshops... I have TONS of them. Didn't keep the floss, though.
